MT Certification Renewals

Reminder

If you took the exam in 2025, you are required to renew by 12/31/2026.

Fee Certification Renewal Period
$50 Standard — certificate expires 12/31/2026
$75 Late — certificate expired 12/31/2025
$100 Lapsed — certificate expired 12/31/2024

Renewals

Renewals of valid certificates are required every year following successful completion of the examination. To renew, technologists must submit six (6) hours of continuing education approved by NC DEQ for water or wastewater operators. Certifications must be renewed every year by December 31, after which renewals are considered "late" and may result in an increased fee.

Renewal is accomplished either by (1) submitting continuing education hours and paying the renewal fee, or (2) successfully completing the next certification level exam. Re-examination at the level being maintained is not necessary for renewal.

Good to know: When a technologist successfully completes their next MT certification level, they are automatically granted a renewal extension through December of the following calendar year. For example, if an MT1 passes the MT2 exam in June 2026, their renewal deadline updates to December 2027 — and no renewal fee is due until then.

A reminder notice will be sent when renewal is required; however, timely renewal is the sole responsibility of the certificate holder.
